The Benefits of Cycling to School or Work

The benefits of cycling are many - manifold - multiple.

You don’t need to know the difference between a bearing, bushing, or brake pedal in order to enjoy the advantages of this low tech means of transport, either.

Repairs are, in most cases, possible using your own tool kit, or available low cost from a bicycle repair store.

A bike may be cheaper or more expensive, but these speedy machines essentially do the same job and are available to suit any budget.

Some of the main advantages of cycling to school and/or work include:

- time: bicycles should always adhere to the rules of the road, including halting at traffic stops, but very often there are quicker routes for cyclists including lanes and bespoke cycling routes. If you are a quick       cyclist - or there’s lots of traffic - you can beat a car, in most instances, thereby saving time.

- the environment: the humble bicycle represents an environmentally-friendly choice when it comes to transport. No petrol and no fumes equals zero emissions on the part of the cyclist as well as a zero carbon footprint.

- cost: cycling is a very low cost means of travel. You will need to purchase the bicycle itself, and then for any repairs along the way, such as punctures, but these cost very little to sort out especially if you do them yourself. You will also need a helmet, pump, cycling gloves, and other small items, but these, too, are low in price. Many workplaces also have a scheme which can help you to buy a bike at cost price, so make sure to check that out.

- maintenance: bicycles, unlike cars, do not need regular servicing. The odd tune-up will do. Flat tyres are easily dealt with, and if you carry your pump with you can be remedied in minutes.

- health: cycling is a great way to get fit! You get a real cardiovascular workout with a cycle ride, and it keeps your muscles and heart moving, resulting in a more conditioned body and a higher level of fitness. It’s also a fantastic way to lose weight.

- mood: a study by the YMCA has shown that regular exercise can boost your mood. The wellbeing score of cyclists is 32% higher than inactive individuals. Cycling is a great way to get a hit of endorphins, and these can make you feel just great.

- gear: you don’t need a tonne of gear to get cycling. A helmet is recommended, but other than that you can just get on your bike and go!

- community: you can cycle with co-workers or school friends, making this a far more community-minded and friendly activity than driving or even taking the bus. You can, even when cycling alone, encounter more of the people and places of your neighborhood than when driving or on a bus or subway, too.

With so many positive reasons to get cycling, there’s really nothing to stop you!
